Vessel

Vessel · 2023 · Exhibition· Surface Gallery, Nottingham.

Vessel was an eight-person group exhibition that took place in the Surface Gallery main exhibition space. As a culmination of a four week development residency, the exhibition created a space for dialogue across non-synchronous pieces, allowing for new meanings to emerge in the overlap.

My role in this project spanned exhibiting work, as well as co-writer for the press release, producer for the catalogue, and led photography, as well as floorplan design (collaborating with Nottingham Contemporary’s Katie Simpson)

Press Release:

Surface is excited to announce the exhibition for our thirteenth East Midlands Graduate Project, EM23: Vessel.

Vessel encapsulates the eclectic approaches of this year’s selected artists in a single space. Diverse materials and beliefs are deployed and interrogated in a range of creative practices including cyanotype drawings, installations, paintings, and multimedia sculptures.

From the post-abstract compositions of painter Luke Narroway to the disturbing living electronics of sculptor Jay Dennis, and the intricate paper sculptures of Tinaye Makuyana, winner of the Primary One to Watch award, Vessel contains visual practices and contemporary concepts that promise a truly engaging and thought provoking exhibition.

The East Midlands Graduate Project supports Fine Art graduates across the region as they make the transition from university to the professional art world. Vessel is the culmination of a four-week residency undertaken in the gallery’s top-floor Project Space. Eight of the region’s most exciting new graduate artists have built on their successes at university and developed their practice to produce original work for this year’s exhibition, EM23: Vessel.

Floor plan:

This exhibition was established as the culmination of a residency development project, as a result it was important for each work to be shown in its optimal conditions. Difference was embraced, and this pieces where also placed to emphasise difference and express each artist as a spotlighted individual, rather than a member of a cohesive unit.
